Lucas Terrier Dog Breed Guide
The English Lucas Terrier is a rare, friendly, and calm breed. While this breed lacks the negative temperament of a terrier. The breed is a unique pet as it is small, kind, and quiet. The Lucas Terrier came to the United States during the 1960s after having first appeared in the 20th century. This dog needs very little care for his mental and physical health. They are very adaptable and very easy to teach to fit into a variety of living environments.
A small dog breed which is purebred and the lucas terrier was created to be an extremely friendly companion dog. The lucas terrier was a hybrid dog created by mating a Norfolk Terrier with a Sealyham Terrier. A dog’s history must be traced back to the original bloodline in order for it to be certified as a lucas terrier today, as they are considered as a purebred breed, combining a norfolk terrier with a sealyham terrier at present will not produce a real lucas terrier.

Lucas Terrier Dog Breed Overview:
Once grown up, the Lucas Terrier is a small breed and the typical height and weight ranges for this breed are 9–12 inches and 11–20 pounds, respectively. Females usually run smaller than guys do and this breed is sweet, intelligent, and eager to pull others along. Lucas Terrier Dog Breed History:
Sir Jocelyn Lucas, an earlier Sealyham Terrier breeder, introduced the Lucas Terrier in Great Britain in the 1940s. The Norfolk Terrier male and the Sealyham Terrier female are crossed to produce the Lucas Terrier. Mrs. Enid Plummer took responsibility for Lucas breeding after Sir Jocelyn became too old to keep up the Lucas line.
After the deaths of Jocelyn and Plummer in the 1980s, a woman by the name of Miss Jumbo Frost took responsibility for preserving the Lucas Terrier breed and name. Before her death, she founded the Lucas Terrier Club, which played a major part in the breed’s progress.
In the 1960s, the breed was introduced in the United States. Probably, Americans who saw them traveling through Europe took them into their arms and brought them to the United States. In the United States, there are very few breeders. The only breeding club in North America with recognized status is the Lucas Terrier Club of America (LTCA).
This Lucas Terrier Club of America preserves and promotes the Lucas all through the US and Canada and the Lucas Terrier Club of the United Kingdom (LTC UK) is another group in the UK that certifies the Lucas. A Lucas must be bred from one of Sir Jocelyn Lucas’s terriers for them to be recognized.
Appearance of Lucas Terrier:
Standing between 10 and 13 inches tall, the Lucas Terrier is a low-to-the-ground, solid, and compact terrier. Since he is a working terrier, his legs should be strong, his spine flexible, and his jaw strong. He should never show up excessively muscular or bulky. His ears are rounded at the tips and have a triangle form.
His ears are held close to his head and positioned semi erectly forward. His nose is black in color and strong, with wide nostrils. His alert expression comes from his deep-set, oval eyes. His eyes should be spread out and have a dark color. The double coat of the Sporting Lucas Terrier determines approximately 0.5 inches in length.
His undercoat is thick and softer, but his topcoat is harsh and stiff. The Sporting Lucas Terrier comes in two different color patterns, solid bodied and mostly white bodied. Sporting Lucas Terriers with mostly white bodies may have dark patches that are any shade of badger-gray, grizzle, black, or brown.
There may be tan markings and any combination of grizzle and tan, black and tan, or brown can be found in Sporting Lucas Terriers with colored bodies. He might have tiny white dots on his chest, brisket, or feet.
Temperament of Lucas Terrier:
The Lucas Terrier, with its popular biddable mentality, is an excellent companion that truly wants to please its owner. Living with it is an amazing pleasure because it is peaceful, quiet, and soft indoors.
Its Terrier ancestry makes it prone to bark and chase after tiny creatures like rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks as well as moving objects like cars. While the Lucas Terrier breed gets along well with children by nature, newborns and young children should never be left alone due to their hyperactive nature. It usually does not behave aggressively toward familiar people or dogs.
Food and Diet Requirements of Lucas Terrier:
You can improve your Lucas Terrier’s dental health by giving it high-quality dry food. If you want to prepare its meal at home, you may mix some brown rice and oats with a variety of veggies, such as potatoes and carrots.
Exercise Requirements of Lucas Terrier:
Walking is the only activity needed of the Lucas Terrier and walking this breed regularly will keep them happy and content and will help to prevent behavioral issues. Playing in a fenced yard or park is another acceptable form of exercise.
How to Train Lucas Terrier Dog Breed:
It is an intelligent and quiet dog that builds up on positive, reward-based training quickly. Walking your dog in public on a regular basis will help it get used to the people in the area. Your dog will have a chance to interact with new people and animals by selecting different routes. Give your Lucas Terrier something tasty when it behaves well around people or other dogs.
Your Lucas Terrier will naturally chase after objects that move quickly, so you should try to control this urge by engaging it in other activities. Try exercising with a fleece lure toy, playing Frisbee or ball, or engaging in dog sports like Disc Dog. To help your Lucas Terrier connect the word with chasing an object, make sure you teach it a command to start and stop the game.
Grooming Needs of Lucas Terrier Dog Breed:
The Lucas Terrier needs to be groomed according to his own tastes. You have three options, either use a wide-toothed comb or your hands to comb out any loose hair, let your dog’s coat grow naturally, or have your dog professionally trimmed. If you decide to use the third approach, be aware that the dog’s coat may change when it is trimmed and dogs with darker coats are likely to have this more often.
The Lucas needs to be brushed once a week and cleaned every two weeks, or more often as needed. This breed has two coats, and the most popular way to groom it is the traditional hand stripping method described above.
There’s no need to worry about hair getting stuck in the carpet or all over the furniture because the Lucas sheds very little. It is believed that this breed is hypoallergenic. They don’t have a strong smell that some other breeds do. Tail docking and declawing are common practices and are up to the breeder.
